Record Club Vol. 19: “Attack on Memory” by Cloud Nothings

The four of us have this tradition we call “Record Club”.  It’s like a book club, but with music.  Every Sunday one band member picks a record for the rest of us to listen to. It’s a pretty sweet excuse for us to hang out together, drink beer, and talk about our favourite bands.

This week, Stefan chose “Attack on Memory” by Cloud Nothings.

“Strangely enough, Steve introduced me to this band.  It’s pretty rare that Steve says anything useful. But sometimes that guy really knows things about music.” - Stefan

This week, Nestor chose “On Borrowed Time” by The Illuminati.

“I really like the production on this record. The guitar and bass are gritty and the drums are huge. Also the crazy guitar playing.” -Nestor

Record Club Vol. 17: “Public Strain” by Women

The four of us have this tradition we call “Record Club”.  It’s like a book club, but with music.  Every Sunday one band member picks a record for the rest of us to listen to. It’s a pretty sweet excuse for us to hang out together, drink beer, and talk about our favourite bands.

This week, Steve chose “Public Strain” by Women.

“This week I chose Public Strain by Women. This is a particularly tense noise rock masterpiece by the short-lived Calgary band (guitarist Christopher Reimer passed away this year).

It features unique song structures and an abrasive undercurrent of guitar feedback and skronk, however there are catchy melodies throughout. It takes some time to get into but I believe this is one of the best Canadian releases in a long, long time.” - Steve

Record Club Vol. 16: “Suicide Invoice” by Hot Snakes

The four of us have this tradition we call “Record Club”.  It’s like a book club, but with music.  Every Sunday one band member picks a record for the rest of us to listen to. It’s a pretty sweet excuse for us to hang out together, drink beer, and talk about our favourite bands.

This week, Zack chose “Suicide Invoice” by Hot Snakes.

“So good.  And so many awesome bands’ existence can be owed to this bands influence. They are completely a culmination of the post-hardcore movement, as they continue the punk tradition (challenging the status quo) in their own way. To put it simplistically, they have expanded the palate of punk music, and the breadth of the musical ideas inherent to punk songwriting. Outside of the figurative meaning though, these are just awesome songs - and when they were released they offered an unusual vitality. A stand out track for me is Bye Nancy Boy.”  -Zack

Record Club Vol. 15: “Big Eye Little Eye” by The Golden Dogs

This week, Stefan chose “Big Eye Little Eye” by The Golden Dogs

“Admittedly, I don’t know too much about this band and I don’t love every song on this album. But the strong songs are so good that it makes up for everything else.  Tracks 1, 5, and 10 are personal highlights.  The dudes voice is so awesome.  And the female vocals match his perfectly.”  -Stefan

Record Club Vol. 13: “Riposte” by Buke & Gass

The four of us have this tradition we call “Record Club”.  It’s like a book club, but with music.  Every Sunday one band member picks a record for the rest of us to listen to. It’s a pretty sweet excuse for us to hang out together, drink beer, and talk about our favourite bands.

This week, Steve chose “Riposte” by Buke & Gass.

I often don’t enjoy duo projects but made an exception for this duo of prog-folk-weirdo-hippie bike mechanics from Brooklyn.  The instruments are homemade — ‘buke’ being a handmade baritone ukulele and ‘gass’ being a mix of guitar and bass strings.  Like the instruments, the hooks are very unconventional — on tunes like “Revel In Contempt,” one of the strongest hooks is stated once but never repeated — and songs are interspersed with short experimental interludes.  This music isn’t for everyone; it takes multiple listens to get through their densely layered songs.  But if you spend some time with this band, you’ll definitely find something you like.” - Steve

Record Club Vol. 12: “No Control” by Bad Religion

This week, Zack chose “No Control” by Bad Religion.

Back when they weren’t ubiquitous, cerebral punkers, they were creating a path for critical (of both self and otherwise) thinking in punk. To me, this album perfectly describes Bad Religion at it’s core. Fast songs, tight harmonies, complex lyrics. Definitely a formative album for me.” - Zack

Record Club Vol. 11: “There’s Nothing Wrong With Love” by Built To Spill

This week, Stefan chose the “There’s Nothing Wrong With Love” by Built To Spill.

Built to Spill is one of my favourite bands ever.  This album is lo-fi and shitty and they suck at playing their instruments. But the songs are so awesome that it doesn’t matter.  Lots of memories tied to this record for me. “Car” was one of the first songs I ever learned to play. I did it to impress a girl. Why else would anyone play music?

These are ‘excerpts’ from our musical essay entitled ‘post-music: a genre beyond the future’. It will be a groundbreaking work in the study of whether or not we are stupid, stupid idiots.
